Growing Guide - Root vegetables

Beetroot
Plant in rows aprox 12inches (30cm) apart at spacings of 4 inches (10cm).

Ground must be kept weed free. Mulching is a good idea to conserve moisture. Click here for our Gardening Equipment

Water moderately at fortnightly intervals when the weather is dry.

Carrots
Carrots do best grown from seed. They don’t like to be transplanted because this can damage their tap root. For this reason we don’t currently offer carrot seedlings although we are currently trialling a number of organic varieties in order to come up with a viable seedling transplant.

Carrots like a deep well cultivated sandy loam soil with a finely worked tilth. The soil should be very light almost sand. Like most roots they will fork if planted in soil that has recently been heavily manured. A Ph of 6 is about right. Sow rows of carrots (6 inches apart) shallow and thinly in warm dry ground – late spring is normally a good time. Tamp down the rows after sowing and water carefully if the ground is dry. Remove weeds whenever they appear! Thin seedlings to 3 inches apart. Get rid of the thinnings or the evil carrot fly will find your carrots more easily! Lift first baby carrots in order to further increase the spacings of the remainder – very tasty steamed and eaten with butter and pepper immediately after coming out of the ground!

Parsnips
As with carrots, Parsnips do not like to be transplanted. They should also be grown from seed. They like deeply dug soil that isn’t too stony.
Sow in rows 1 foot (30cm) apart dropping one seed every inch (2.5cm). Thin seedlings and begin lifting and eating baby parsnips to increase spacings.
Parsnips do take a long time to grow! Weed regularly and don’t let soil dry out too much.
