Growing Guide - Sweetcorn

Sweetcorn likes a good fertile well drained soil that has had plenty of manure added.

Plant your Rocket Gardens seedlings from the middle of May onwards but make sure you cover them with horticultural fleece if there is any risk of frost. Plant the seedlings into the ground whilst still in their biodegradable pots. The plants should be spaced approximately 18 inches (45cm) apart each way.

Sweetcorn because it is wind pollinated must be planted in blocks of at least four rows width. It should not be planted in a single row.
Planting through a biodegradable paper mulch is a good idea as it will suppress weeds and retain soil moisture - Click here for Gardening Equipment

Water the plants in dry weather. Provide some support if your garden is in a windy location.

Once the cobs are ripe cook the sweetcorn as soon as possible after picking (as soon as sweetcorn are picked their sugars start to deteriorate.) Ideally run from the garden to the kitchen with your sweetcorn and throw them into an already boiling pan of water (at that moment in time you’re probably about to eat the freshest sweetcorn in the country!)
