How to prepare your planters and containers |
|
Where space is limited, planting vegetables in containers is a great way to grow edible crops in the garden.
There are lots of vegetables that are particularly well suited to growing in containers including beetroot, broad beans, carrots, spinach, dwarf French beans, herbs, aubergines, courgettes, peas, potatoes, radishes, rocket, runner beans, chillies & peppers, salad leaves, salad onions, turnips, tomatoes and many more.
Choosing your containers:
•Pots, troughs and grow-bags can all be used to grow fresh, tasty produce.
• Smaller containers can result in a lack of moisture and nutrients for plant roots. Aim for containers with a depth and width of at least 45cm (18in), otherwise frequent watering and feeding will be needed.
When using a larger container fist place gravel, small stones or pieces of broken terracotta pot into the base of the container before filling with compost. This will help aid drainage.
