Growing Guide - Composting and Worms |
|
What is worm cast?
Worm cast is an amazing natural fertiliser. It is rich in humus and readily available plant nutrients. It can be used as a fertilizer, soil conditioner or potting compost ingredient. It is ideal for vegetables, fruits, flowers, shrubs and even lawns. It helps promote strong disease resistant plants and noticeable improvements in growth rates. It is not a bulky product so ideal for mail ordering. We recommend you use it where it will be most effective for example incorporate it into the areas of soil where Rocket Gardens seedlings are to be planted, sprinkle along seed drills when sowing, or work it into containers.
It is ideal for use where young seedlings are to be planted because it will not scorch tender root systems.
Analysis of the worm cast has shown it to possess an NPK value of 6-9-6, which is comparable to other concentrated fertilisers such as calcified seaweed.
How is it produced?
The worm cast supplied by Rocket Gardens is produced by worms that feed on ‘worm beds’ full of horse manure a few hundred metres from our greenhouses. The worms digest the manure, it passes through their gut and creates this amazing natural fertiliser. The worm cast is harvested after 3-4 years and then graded to ensure a fine even consistency ready for immediate use as a plant feed.
How can I obtain worm cast?
Rocket Gardens are happy to deliver worm cast direct to your door. In comparison to other organic fertilisers worm cast is not a bulky product so is ideally suited to being shipped by mail order.
The worm cast is delivered with details of mixing suggestions for a wide range of uses from potting compost to lawn dressing.
Produce your own worm cast
Why not produce your own worm cast. It is probably the single most effective method of household recycling available to any family.
It will enable you and your little Cornish worms (who are happy to go on holiday outside of the County) to convert all of your organic kitchen and garden waste into beautiful rich worm cast compost ideal for putting straight back into your soil. Recycling doesn’t get any better than this!
It also means far less waste will leave your house and make its way via the dustbin to a landfill site. It is estimated that between 40 -60 % of household waste could be recycled in this manner.
How do I do make my own wormcast?
Order yourself a worm composter from Rocket Gardens. This will provide the average family with everything they need to begin recycling kitchen and garden waste into useable worm cast. The kit includes:
Worm composter
1kg Cornish composting worms
