Planting/Growing Advice: Potatoes need a bit of depth, you can grow them in the ground, raised bed or in a deep planter. These should be planted in spring. If you receive them in Feb/Mar, it is best to chit them before planting out in late March/April. If received in April/May you can plant straight away without chitting.

For earlies we recommend planting 30cm apart with 40-50cm between rows and for second earlies and main crops we recommend around 40cm apart with 75cm between rows.

When to harvest: Earlies are usually ready when the flowers open and Maincrops are ready when the leaves have died. Look for these telltale signs to know when your spuds are ready, and then doublecheck by carefully scraping away the earth with your hand or a trowel to see that they’re a good size for harvesting.

  • King Edward Seed Potatoes (Maincrop)

    £4.99
    (10 Tubers)

    For the best roasties!
This is a relatively late cropping variety, that is usually ready to harvest in September/October. It is one of the more popular varieties to grow, largely because of the flavour – it is just great for roast potatoes, and for mash. If your plot is prone to eelworm and blight, you may find the tubers fall victim, but otherwise it is a great variety for home growing.

  • Pentland Javelin Seed Potatoes (First Early)

Good flavour, and seems less popular with slugs

This variety is full of flavour. It is usually ready to harvest in late June after planting in March, and produces waxy tubers with yellow flesh. There’s no scientific basis for the argument that this variety tends to be less damaged by slugs, but if you do find your potatoes are normally slug-damaged, Pentland Javelin may be worth a try! They are good cut and boiled for salads, but you can use them for roasting and mashing as well.

Setanta is a new Irish variety of potato with the ever-popular Rooster as one of its parent lines. It has a fairly high resistance to blight which makes it a particularly popular maincrop choice (maincrop potatoes tend to be in the ground at around the time blight normally hits, in late summer, whilst earlies have often been harvested already.) Yields are good with red skinned tubers with creamy yellow flesh.

  • Maris Peer Seed Potatoes (Second Early)

    £4.99
    (10 Tubers)

A trusted favourite & good for planting late…
This amazingly popular variety produces reliably regular round shaped and medium sized potatoes. They will normally be ready to harvest in July, and since the texture remains firm they are particularly well suited to boiling. One of the things we like about them is that you can choose to plant them a bit later in the year for a Christmas crop – if you’d like to do this, store the seed potatoes in a dry paper sack (with a few holes for air circulation) in a cool, dark place and plant them in July. Otherwise, pop them in the ground in March/April after chitting and harvest in July.

Number of tubers (seed potatoes): 10

    Variety: Maris Peer

In the kitchen: This variety has many uses including boiling for salads, steaming and chipping.
