  • Leeks – Musselburgh

    A tried and tested traditional variety
    Musselburgh produces huge, handsome leeks with thick stems and dark green leaves. It is reliable, easy to grow, winter hardy, with good disease resistance and an excellent strong flavour. It will be ready for harvesting late summer to early winter. It’s easy to grow leeks from plug plants – just follow the instructional leaflet that will arrive with your plug plants.

    Variety: Musselburgh (organic)

    In the kitchen: Leeks are delicious in soups, stews and pies. You can steam, fry or boil. Finely chopping leeks brings out the flavour and texture.

    Planting Advice: You may find multiple seedlings per plug, these are best separated out carefully. Use a pencil or small stick to make 5-10cm deep holes 10-15cm apart in the soil, then carefully put a leek seedling in each hole and water well to "puddle in". Harvesting: Harvest in late summer/autumn before the plants start bolting (forming flower heads)

    Giant Winter Leeks

    The gardener’s choice of leek
    Giant Winter is an excellent late variety producing thick leeks that will hold well in the ground for a long time and are winter hardy. You will find more than one leek growing in most of your plug plants, so you will get plenty of leeks to harvest! You can either tease them apart to plant each leek separately, or plant together without separating. There is plenty of growing advice in the growing guide that arrives with the plug plants.

    Onion – Bedfordshire Champion

    A must have in the kitchen garden
    This onion variety is reliable and well suited to the UK climate with late summer maturity. Bedfordshire Champion produces large, globe shaped, golden-brown skinned bulbs with a lovely mild flavour. Let the skins dry in the sun for a few days after harvesting and they should store well. You will receive a complete growing guide with your onion plug plants.

    In the kitchen: Onions are endlessly versatile and an essential ingredient in countless recipes. Gently fry chopped or sliced onion and use as the base to pasta sauces, soups and stews. Or cut into wedges and roast. Alternatively cut into rings, batter and deep fry.

  • Red Onion – Red Baron

    A must have in the kitchen garden
    This onion variety will produce firm, flattish-round bulbs with dark purple skin and red-tinged flesh. You can expect to harvest in late summer – if you dry the skins well (by drying in the sun for several days) the onions will store well. Try planting your onion plants next to carrots as this will help to deter carrot fly from the carrots. Growing onions from plug plants is just as easy as growing onions from sets.     Variety: Red Baron (organic)

    In the kitchen: Onions are endlessly versatile and an essential ingredient in countless recipes. Red onions are an attractive, milder, sweeter alternative to the yellow onion. Good for salads, marinades, salsas and roasts.

    Loading your veg patch with spring onions is such a good idea. You can really pack them in as they hardly take up any space. They grow quite quickly during the spring and summer months too so you’ll be able to plant something else in their place later in the season.
