Winter Squash – Marina di Chioggia

We like this one for a Hallowe’en display with its brilliant knobbly skin! Don’t carve it though as it is a great storer and best eaten in the winter months long after harvesting. The fruits are quite big (around 4-5kg) with vivid orange flesh that roasts well. Cut into chunky wedges and roast with the skin on, then peel when cooked.

This cylindrical beetroot has smooth skin and dark purple-red flesh. We love it for being so easy to slice, and it is perfect for pots too as it really needs very little space to grow. This is a fantastic climbing squash – You can either eat the fruits like courgettes whilst they are still small – they taste quite similar – or leave them to grow and further ripen before storing them in much the same way as winter squash. As a climber, you’ll need to have space for it to sprawl along the ground (a dedicated raised bed is perfect) or a sturdy trellis/fence for the plants to climb.
