Don’t be tempted to overcrowd plants

This photo is a classic example of someone trying to plant too closely together and not giving the plants enough space, either above or below the surface of the soil. Overcrowding like this can lead to problems like poor growth, disease, and reduced yields.

If you look at the tomato plants in the photo, you can already get a feel for how they are competing and struggling – the slightly yellowing leaves are a strong indication that they’re not getting their needs met, and the plant at the back is beginning to grow a bit leggy as it tried to get more sunlight. You can be sure that these tomatoes will succumb to blight more quickly too, later in the season, simply because they are so close together that there is not enough space for air to circulate around them well and that they will have diminished roots from being packed in so tightly.

You’ll find a growing guide in with your plant delivery when you order from us, and this has all the spacing information you need. Please do follow the advice in there rather than trying to cram things in like this. You will reap the rewards later in the season – you’ll have healthier plants, with better yields.
