How to Plant Marjoram
- These plants are surprisingly easy-going, so as long as they have a good dose of sunshine each day they will grow very well. They’ll even tolerate some light shade.
- Plant 40cm apart
- They will do well in the ground or in pots.
- Planting in a pot that you can put outside in the summer and inside in the winter works wonders!
How to Grow Marjoram
- Keep watered during dry spells
- The plants will produce lots of leaves in early spring, followed by beautiful display of small flowers in summer. You can cut them back just before flowering for another flurry of leaves, or allow them to flower and cut them back when the flowers start to form seed heads. Marjoram will self-seed vigorously so don’t allow seeds to form if you want to keep them under control!
- At the end of the autumn they will naturally die back – this is a good time to remove all the woody old growth – simply cut it back to just above ground level. New leaves will come through in early spring.
- Marjoram is technically a perennial although most people grow them as annuals. If you bring them inside over the winter they are likely to grow back the following year.
How to Harvest Marjoram
- Harvest sprigs of leaves as you want to use them – delicious with tomatoes!
- The flowers are very good for cutting
