How to grow... Thyme
Rocket Growing Guides
Thyme is such a versatile herb and when it flowers it is very pretty in the garden too. We grow English Thyme which has great flavour. As a young plant you can use the whole sprig, but it becomes woodier over time (excuse the pun) and the leaves can then be picked off to use. Thyme is an evergreen plant.

How to Plant Thyme
- Grows well in pots, or at the front of beds and borders.
- You can grow it indoors on a sunny windowsill
- Choose a sunny spot with light, well-draining soil. If in pots, make sure they have good drainage.
- Plant 30cm apart
- If growing in pots, 3 plants in a 30cm wide pot will be fine, and you can re-pot them into larger pots if they grow too big.
How to Grow Thyme
- Let the soil dry out a bit between watering
- Trim back woody stems after the plant flowers, this will keep the plant nice and bushy.
- Cut your thyme plant back a little during the summer to encourage your plant to grow more. At the end of autumn, cut it right back.
How to Harvest Thyme
- Harvest sprigs of thyme by cutting them off as you need them throughout the year.
- Picking your thyme regularly will keep the plant producing more.
Is Thyme good for Companion Planting?
- Thyme makes a good plant for offering ground cover to suppress weeds, and also to attract bees and pollinators but it doesn’t have any specific companion plant qualities.
