    Companion planting is a traditional and natural way to deter pests from crops that you are growing and to attract good insects such as hoverflies, lacewings and ladybirds which are the best natural predators of aphids and whitefly. Our little companion plant pack is a great way to get started and not only do the plants look lovely when interspersed with your vegetables, they all have the advantage of being edible too.

    With 30 plants in total, this pack contains the following plants:

    Tagetes x 10
    Plant tagetes close to your tomatoes, peppers and aubergine to deter whitefly. They also look very pretty when in flower. The petals have a distinctive zesty flavour and can picked and used fresh to garnish salads.

    Marigold x 10
    The strong colour of marigolds attracts beneficial hoverflies, lacewings and ladybirds. Plant them in amongst your crops or next to rows of veg. The flowers and leaves have a mild citrus flavour and can be used to garnish salads or desserts.

    Nasturtiums x 10
    Nasturtiums secrete a mustard oil that insects love, plant them as a sacrificial crop close to brassicas to deter caterpillars. A wonderful pretty companion plant with edible leaves and petals which have a distinctive peppery taste.

    Marigolds have long been a veg patch favourite for encouraging bees and other pollinators, as well as helping to protect your crops from pests like aphids. Dotting a few clusters here and there amongst your crops will really bring your plot to life. They’ll keep flowering until the frosts get too heavy, but you can also plant them in a greenhouse or polytunnel amongst your autumn crops.

    Pop some nasturtiums in a pot near your brassicas to keep cabbage white butterflies off your veg crops, or pop them in a pot elsewhere so that you can pick off the edible flowers to enjoy in salads or sprinkled on dishes like risotto. They will keep flowering until mid/late autumn before self seeding for the following year. We’d recommend planting up a few in your greenhouse with any autumn/winter crops too.

    Our NEW wildflower plug plants are brilliant for attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinators. There are over 100 different varieties, all annuals which will readily self seed, giving you continual colour for months. They are great for planting in a dedicated patch in the garden, or in a pot/planter for a mini-meadow on your patio.

    As pictured, each plug plant will have a cluster of different seedlings emerging, a lucky dip from the list below, and should not be thinned out. This way, you’ll get a fairly natural looking little meadow. For best results, plant the plugs straight into pots, containers or beds quite close together, about 3-4cm apart. We would recommend 50 plugs to a 40cm wide pot, 100 plugs to a 50cm + wide pot, and 200 plugs per square metre if planting in beds/borders (or for one of our traditional crate planters )
