Bring on the bubble & squeak!

  • Chicory – Variegata di Castelfranco (Autumn)

    £4.99
    (10 Plug Plants)

    Colourful leaves for winter salads

These are such gorgeous leaves for winter growing, with freckle-like red flecks. The leaves can be used as cut-and-come again for salads while the plant is quite young. In the heart of the winter, when it reaches maturity, you are better off harvesting the whole heart and cooking it to eat. You’ll find that the red flecks gradually darken as the plant matures. Plant in September and October approx 25cm apart in raised beds, traditional veg patches or in pots and planters. They are frost tolerant and can be grown outside very happily.

    Variety: Variegata di Castelfranco (organic*)

In the kitchen: Can be used in salads or cooked. Try blanching it or braised.

  • Lettuce – Greenhouse Brighton (Autumn)

    £4.99
    (10 plug plants)

A brilliant buttercrunch lettuce for winter growing
This is a fab buttercrunch lettuce for winter growing and we are delighted to add it to our plant collection this autumn. We find it best to wait and harvest as whole heads, but if you’re impatient you can pick some of the outer leaves earlier in the season. It is nice and hardy so will withstand the winter well, although you could cover it with horticultural fleece if it turns really cold.

A brilliant cos-style lettuce for winter growing
This is a wonderful lettuce for winter growing so we are excited to add it to our plant collection this autumn. It is an old French romaine variety that can be harvested as single leaves or whole heads. The leaves turn redder and redder as the weather turns colder, and it is really hardy so excellent for outside growing during these colder months.

  • Turnip – Milan Purple Top (Autumn)

    £5.99
    (10 Plug Plants)

    Deliciously tasty, quick growing turnips
Milan Purple Top is a really popular variety, so we’re excited to introduce it to our range. The turnips are quite flat, with purple tops. They are renowned for being tasty, easy to grow and a good size (without becoming woody as they grow). If possible, grow in a greenhouse or polytunnel over autumn and winter, otherwise, cover with fleece to keep it a little warmer so that you can harvest it, hopefully before Christmas. These are one of the easier brassicas to grow, and you will receive a full growing guide with the plants.

You should be able to start harvesting from late October, and it’ll keep producing new leaves right through till spring. • Chinese Mustard – Green In Snow (Autumn)

    £4.99
    (10 Plug Plants)

Hardy mustard leaves for winter growing
These are a useful winter leaf to grow, as they are brilliantly frost-hardy (hence the name – Green In Snow!) and provide a great source of baby leaf for salads. While the leaves are still young, the flavour is quite mild, getting hotter as they grow and mature. If you love a strong dose of mustardy heat, wait until the leaves are nice and big before you harvest them – you won’t be disappointed!

    (10 Plug Plants)

Great for autumn baby leaf salads
This is a great pak choi option for those who prefer less stem and more leaf. The slender stems also make it really good for braising whole, which can make for a lovely side dish either for an Asian inspired dish, or as simple traditional greens to go with a roast or something. It is such a good plant for autumn growing, just be sure to keep it well protected from slugs and snails.

  • Oriental Choi – Vivid (Autumn)

    £4.99
    (10 Plug Plants)

Great for autumn baby leaf salads
You might recognise this gorgeous purple-red leaf from mixed baby leaf salads, and it is well worth growing over the autumn so that you can add it to your own homegrown salads. You can also let it grow to maturity, harvesting the larger leaves later in the year to use for stir-fries or simply for braising to serve with a roast dinner. Both options are great, and of course you can do a combination of the two, harvesting some leaves young, and waiting before harvesting others. It is a wonderfully hardy plant so you’ll get a nice, long harvesting window.
