    This old-fashioned round cucumber will produce delightful shaped, yellow coloured fruits. The fruits are crunchy, juicy, mild and sweet with fantastic flavour. You should be able to eat the cucumbers by the end of July. If you keep picking, they’ll go on producing into the autumn, and finish in October (depending on the season, of course!) Cucumbers are best grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel, but you can plant them outside in a sunny, sheltered spot from late May onwards as well.   • Borlotti Bean – Barlotta Lingua di Fuoco

    Grow borlotti beans to store for stews
    These beans add a splash of fun and colour into your garden. This variety of borlotti beans is perfectly suited to our cooler climate. The canes will climb to about 2 metres, so plant at the base of a wigwam or bamboo support. You can harvest young while the pods are green to use as runner beans, or wait until the end of the season when they’ve turned purple if you’d like to pod the beans to store for stews and casseroles.     In the kitchen: You can eat these vibrant pods when small and tender (and mostly green) or allow them to reach full size and store the beans inside once the pods have dried and turned a deep purple. With a sweetish flavour and smooth creamy texture, these beans work well in a salad or in a hearty soup or casserole.

  • Cardoon Leaves

    Cardoon variation of Artichoke
    If you love Globe Artichokes you’ll love these Cardoons. The plants are very similar with large incised leaves that look just like artichoke leaves, the big difference is that you eat the stems not the fruit. Harvest these plants from October – December and blanch 2 weeks before harvest by wrapping stems in cardboard. The Cardoon plants can grow to 5-6ft tall. Make sure you plant in a permanent position at the back of a large border, they will need space and will return year after year.

    In the kitchen: Cook stems for eating (as opposed to the fruits as you would with Globe Artichokes). Drop Cardoon stalks in boiling water for 7-8 minutes.
