Chicory – Rossa di Treviso (Autumn)

Colourful plants for autumn/winter growing

This is a fun vegetable plant to grow, adding a deep red colour to your plot over autumn and winter. Harvest the whole head in early spring or just use the outer leaves earlier on in salads. Once fully grown you can usually leave chicory in the ground until you’re ready to harvest. Chicory will start out with greener leaves that gradually darken as the plant matures. In the kitchen: Can be used in salads or cooked. Try blanching it or braised.

Planting/Growing Advice: Plant in September and October approx 25cm apart in raised beds, traditional veg patches or in pots and planters. They are frost tolerant and can be grown outside.

When to harvest: You can start picking the outer leaves a month or so after planting or wait until the entire head forms and harvest in early spring.
