Winter Green Cabbage
Out of stock
Bring on the bubble & squeak!
This is a good, reliable cabbage that is easy to grow over the autumn and winter months. It has great flavour and is super hardy so will withstand the cold winter well, ready to produce a harvestable head of cabbage greens between January and March. The heart is a little looser than spring greens, more like a savoy cabbage.
Variety: Wintergreen (organic*)
Number of plants: 10
Can be grown in: Raised beds or pots. Find out more about growing cabbages in our growing guide below.
In the kitchen: Enjoy it in stir-fries, steam it, boil it and all sorts. We rather like it cooked up in tasty bubble & squeak. With a poached egg on top. Mmm.
Delivery: These plug plants can be delivered between late August and mid-late October. Available to pre-order now. These plants will arrive bare-rooted with an approximate height of 10-15cm.
Brassicas prefer a sunny site with deep, firm, moisture retentive soil.
Can be grown in....
Brassicas are best grown in raised beds or a well dug veg patch.
How far apart?
About 30cm apart is a good general rule for growing brassicas. Broccoli can get surprisingly big, so it’s worth giving them a little extra space, 50cm will do the trick.
When your plants arrive....
Your baby plants will arrive carefully packed in straw. They may look a little tired from their travels. This is quite normal but, as soon as possible, carefully unpack them all.
Each type of plant will have an identification label to help you spot which they are. Lay them out into their respective plant types (e.g. lettuce, cauliflower, peas). Then, stand them upright, being especially careful with the ones that aren’t in bio pots. The roots may be dry, so give them all a good drink of water by submerging the roots for a few minutes in a container of clean water.
Now you are ready to plant your Rocket Garden. Try to do this within 24 hours of the arrival of your plants.
Looking after your plants....
Brassicas are fairly hassle free. Follow these tips and you’ll do just fine.
Give them a collar
When you plant your brassicas, it’s a good idea to put a 10cm diameter covering around the base. Some old carpet or a bit of cardboard. This is known as a brassica collar and keeps your veg protected from cabbage root fly.
Make sure plants don’t dry out – regular watering is important during dry spells. Use a liquid feed once they’ve started to grow a little, as they need a little extra nitrogen.
Keep weeds down and cover with a mesh netting to keep butterflies (Cabbage Whites love brassicas) and birds away (pigeons are the worst culprit).
Watch out for....
Caterpillars and slugs
Pigeons and rabbits
They're ready to harvest when....
You’ll be able to see when your brassicas are ready. Use secateurs to cut veg like cauliflower and broccoli from their stalk. For cabbages and leafy brassicas, cut them at the base with a sharp knife.
Harvest them as you want to eat them – they will mostly store in the fridge for a few days, but are much better cooked fresh.
Ways to cook
Brassicas are good simply steamed and served with a little butter or olive oil. They are also great for stir frying with a pinch of freshly chopped chilli and ginger. Cauliflower works well in curries too.
