Colourful plants for autumn/winter growing

This is a fun vegetable plant to grow, adding a deep red colour to your plot over autumn and winter. Harvest the whole head in early spring or just use the outer leaves earlier on in salads. Once fully grown you can usually leave chicory in the ground until you’re ready to harvest. Chicory will start out with greener leaves that gradually darken as the plant matures. You will receive a full growing guide with the plug plants.

Number of plants: 10 plug plants

Variety: Rossa di Treviso (organic*)

In the kitchen: Can be used in salads or cooked. Try blanching it or braised.

Planting/Growing Advice: Plant in September and October approx 25cm apart in raised beds, traditional veg patches or in pots and planters. They are frost tolerant and can be grown outside.

When to harvest: You can start picking the outer leaves a month or so after planting or wait until the entire head forms and harvest in early spring.

Looking after your plants....

Chicory doesn’t need an awful lot of effort, just follow these simple steps and you should get a decent crop.

Chicory

Water well when warm

Water plants well during hot weather. If you are growing them in pots they will benefit from a liquid feet every 2 weeks.

Chicory

They don't like competition

Keep chicory plants well weeded for best results.

Chicory

To whiten the leaves...

To make leaves whiter, tie a piece of string around the leaves and draw them together to prevent light from reaching inner leaves. Do this about 10 days before harvesting the leaves, much longer and the plants will begin to suffer.

Storage Tips

Pick leaves as you need them as chicory will not last long once harvested.

Ways to cook

Chicory is most often eaten raw in salads. It can be bitter though, so you can always steam or blanch it instead. Another nice thing to do is fill a leaf with a little blue cheese, some chopped walnuts and chopped apple as a canapé.
