Turnip – Sweetbell (Autumn)

Easy to grow and deliciously tasty
This fast growing root vegetable, with its purple topped roots and succulent white flesh has an exquisite flavour with an exceptionally sweet, firm and crisp texture. If possible, grow in a greenhouse or polytunnel, otherwise, cover with fleece to keep it a little warmer for faster growth.

Number of plants: 10

Variety: Sweetbell (organic*)

In the kitchen: Try grated raw into salads, added to casseroles, stir-fries or served as a separate vegetable completely.

Delivery Info: Available to order now for delivery in September and October. Please see FAQs for up-to-date delivery info.

Planting/Growing Advice: Plant in September and October approx 20-30cm apart in raised beds, traditional veg patches or in pots and planters. They will grow quite quickly while the weather is relatively warm in autumn, and then will slow down in the colder months. They are frost tolerant and will grow happily outside. Protect from pigeons and slugs.

When to harvest: You can expect to be able to harvest in early spring (or sooner if it is mild). Wait until you can see that the crown has reached golf ball size, and then harvest anytime after that. You can leave them in the ground over winter and harvest as you want to use them.

*Transplants suitable for organic growing.

Looking after your plants....

Follow our tips below when growing turnips for the best results.

Watch they don't get waterlogged

In areas of heavy rainfall plant your seedlings in ridges to help with drainage. Otherwise plant on flat ground which has been well worked and consolidated.

Water when it's dry

Water plants well after planting and during periods of dry weather.

Storage Tips

You can store them in a cool dark place (in a sand box is best.)

Ways to cook

Add turnips to any casserole or stew, or pop into a root veg soup. It mashes well too.
