Brussels Sprouts

Out of stock

This favourite for a family roast makes a great addition to the veg patch!
Brussels are best planted out in July to give a winter crop around Christmas time, and wow your family and friends with homegrown brussels that are packed with flavour. When it comes to harvesting them, always start at the bottom of the stalk, picking just what you need and working your way up. Sprouts are a brassica so pop a brassica collar around the base when you plant them and net them against birds.

Number of plants: 10

Variety: Maximus (organic*)

Can be grown in: Brussels are best grown in raised beds or a well dug veg patch. Plant them nice and deeply so that they can build strong roots to support their sprouts and leave approx 60cm between plants, but you can pop other plants in between them, like lettuces or even other cabbages.

In the kitchen: Brussels are packed full of taste and are great roasted, steamed, boiled or for a really delicious flavour, try sautéed Brussels with bacon and a little butter.

Can be delivered from: July

*Transplants suitable for organic growing.

The right site

Can be grown in....

Cabbages will prefer to be grown in raised beds or a well dug veg patch.

How far apart?

About 30cm apart.

Looking after your plants....

Cabbages are fairly hassle free. Follow these tips and you’ll do just fine.

Feed them

Make sure plants don’t dry out – regular watering is important during dry spells. Use a liquid feed once they’ve started to grow a little, as they need a little extra nitrogen.

Protect them

Keep weeds down and cover with a netting to keep birds away

Storage Tips

Harvest them as you want to eat them – they will store in the fridge for a few days, but are much better cooked fresh.

Ways to cook

Bubble and squeak is a fabulous cabbage dish, or you can simply stir fry with a little vegetable oil.
