Can be grown in....
Raised beds or pots – they are pretty easy growing!
How far apart?
As a general rule, give them about 15cm space. As always, you should check the instructions on each variety when you receive your baby plants to make sure you give them enough space.
When your plants arrive....
Your baby plants will arrive carefully packed in straw. They may look a little tired from their travels. This is quite normal but, as soon as possible, carefully unpack them all.
Each type of plant will have an identification label to help you spot which they are. Lay them out into their respective plant types (e.g. lettuce, cauliflower, peas). Then, stand them upright, being especially careful with the ones that aren’t in bio pots. The roots may be dry, so give them all a good drink of water by submerging the roots for a few minutes in a container of clean water.
Now you are ready to plant your Rocket Garden. Try to do this within 24 hours of the arrival of your plants.
Looking after your plants....
Lettuces and leaves are really very low-maintenance, so you can’t go too wrong.
Water well, particularly during dry spells
Keep the weeds down to give them the best chance
Watch out for....
If your lettuce plant wilts suddenly, it’s a sign of pests in the roots – best to dig them up carefully so other plants don’t get infected.
Slugs & Snails
They're ready to harvest when....
You can start harvesting as soon as you’re happy with the size of them! Cut leaves carefully from the stem, and they’ll keep producing more.
Loose Leaf – these lettuces are quite open, ideal for cutting leaf by leaf
Hearting Lettuces – as the name suggests, these lettuces form a tight heart – eg Little Gem
We really recommend picking what you need, when you need it. But they will keep in the fridge for a coupleof days.
Ways to cook
It’s not all about salads, although freshly cut lettuce from the garden is one of the best things about summer salads! You can try making summer soups with wilted lettuce, pea and mint. And a lot of leaves are great in stir fries.
When we deliver
We usually deliver these plants through into July, although it’s a little dependent on the weather.
