Over the next few weeks you will inevitably be pulling up old veg plants that have fulfilled thir purpose this season. It’s a great source of compost materials, but you need to be a little bit picky about what does and doesn’t make it onto the compost heap.
Dos:
- Old, healthy veg plants, roots and all
- Healthy looking leaves
- Fallen leaves
- Worms
- Veg that has started rotting slightly (assuming you won’t be eating it!)
- Weeds that haven’t yet gone to seed
- Veg peelings from the kitchen (uncooked)
Don’ts:
- Blight affected foliage
- Foliage with powdery mildew
- Potato tubers (unless you want them to sprout in your compost heap!)
- Veg that is carrying disease or pests
- Plants/weeds that are carrying seeds
- Cooked scraps (it’ll only attract rats)
