Veg patch composting… dos and don’ts

Over the next few weeks you will inevitably be pulling up old veg plants that have fulfilled thir purpose this season. It’s a great source of compost materials, but you need to be a little bit picky about what does and doesn’t make it onto the compost heap.

Dos:

  • Old, healthy veg plants, roots and all
  • Healthy looking leaves
  • Fallen leaves
  • Worms
  • Veg that has started rotting slightly (assuming you won’t be eating it!)
  • Weeds that haven’t yet gone to seed
  • Veg peelings from the kitchen (uncooked)

Don’ts:

  • Blight affected foliage
  • Foliage with powdery mildew
  • Potato tubers (unless you want them to sprout in your compost heap!)
  • Veg that is carrying disease or pests
  • Plants/weeds that are carrying seeds
  • Cooked scraps (it’ll only attract rats)
