Where are the cabbage whites?

Whilst we saw a few cabbage whites flitting around in May, we have seen very few over the past few weeks. Where are they all? They are normally very active at this time of year, busily laying their eggs on the leaves of brassicas, but we have seen very few this month.

We wonder if this is the case just in Cornwall, or whether the rest of the country is missing their cabbage whites as well. Our guess is that they’ve suffered from the colder weather this spring, and that they won’t start laying their eggs until a little later in the season this year.

It’s a shame not to see them around the garden, although obviously it’s good news for our brassica plants which are growing nicely without caterpillar damage!
