A speedy crop – Diary of a Rocket Gardener

It was with childish excitement that I harvested some actual veg from my kitchen garden this evening. Brilliant! It wasn’t much, just a few leaves of chard, but then just a few weeks ago I wasn’t even growing anything. My rainbow chard is growing quite quickly so I just picked off some of the outer leaves and added them to quite a tasty pasta dish (roasted peppers, roasted onions, feta, mint from the garden, a squeeze of lemon juice, a drizzle of olive oil and a handful of rainbow chard. Yum)

In other news, everything else is growing quite fast too. After quite a long dry spell we had quite a lot of rain in quite a short amount of time. I almost felt like I was in the tropics. Look at the difference it has made in my sweetcorn and lettuce bed, in 3 weeks.

I’ll be picking the outer leaves of the lettuces (red and green salad bowl lettuce) this weekend for lunch I think.

And my peas are podding too…it is one of the more delightful things I think, to pick a pea pod, pod it and pop it one’s mouth straight away.

So all in all it’s been a good week, but not ALL good. Slugs. They have been all over the shop. Grrr. Please don’t tell anyone, but I’m going away for a few days and I decided to put some pellets down. It says on the pack that they’re organic though, so I’m not judging myself.
