Celery – Green Utah

An easy to grow variety of celery
This variety of celery forms crisp green stalks. It doesn’t need to be blanched as it grows – it is a ‘self-blanching’ variety. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry, because all it basically means is that you don’t need to do anything other than pop the plants in the ground and keep them well watered throughout the growing season. There is loads of advice in the growing guide that comes with the plug plants.

Number of plants: 10 plug plants

Variety: Green Utah (organic*)

In the kitchen: Delicious used raw in salads, or for using to dip into hummus. Celery is equally delicious if braised or chopped in casseroles or a fish pie, adding a different texture to your dish. Use the leaves and any older tougher stalks to make stock.

Delivery Info: Please see FAQs for up-to-date delivery info.

Planting/Growing Advice: Plant plugs in spring/summer approx 15cm apart in planters, raised beds, pots, containers or grow bags.

When to harvest: Start cutting the salad leaves when the plants reach about 10cm high. Clip the leaves with scissors, and the plants will re-grow and can be trimmed several times.

*Transplants suitable for organic growing.

The right site

Celery loves deep fertile soil that is very moist but not boggy! Plenty of organic matter is essential. It prefers acid to alkaline conditions, so never give it lime.

Can be grown in....

Raised beds or pots/containers.

How far apart?

25cm apart.

Looking after your plants....

We’ve deliberately chosen a variety that is easy to grow. Follow these few golden rules and you should get a good crop.

Remove side shoots

As the plants develop cut off the side shoots so that they shoot straight upwards.

Feed them if growing in pots

If your celery is growing in containers or pots, it’s best to add a liquid feed every 2 weeks.

Keep them well watered

Celery needs moist soil to grow successfully, so make sure you give them plenty of water and don’t let them dry out.

Storage Tips

Celery will keep well in the fridge but it’s best to harvest as you want to use it.

Ways to cook

As well as being good in salads, celery is great for making stock – make a mirepoix by roughly chopping celery, carrots, onions and leeks, and boil these either on their own for half an hour for a veggie stock, or add them towards the end of chicken stock.
