Growing carrots is one of the most rewarding things to do in your kitchen garden…there is just something so satisfying about pulling them up and washing off all the soil so that you can cook them. These Nantes Carrots have a lovely sweet flavour. They’re a bit of a classic in the carrot world, and you can expect to get a size around 6 inches out of them. Plant your carrots plants in early/mid September for a harvest in time for Christmas! If the weather starts to get a bit chilly/frosty – cover outside plants with a fleece or grow them in a greenhouse.Growing Autumn carrots from plug plants is easy – the plants arrive in tiny biodegradable pots and you can simply plant them into well dug soil or containers. This Italian kale has beautiful dark green leaves and looks really striking in the vegetable patch when it’s fully grown. In fact, many people choose to plant it in borders for exactly that reason. It’s easy to grow (easier than many other brassicas) and will provide you with leaves for several months, right into spring. You’ll find it grows slowly over the coldest months, but you should be able to enjoy a crop from late November onwards, depending on the weather. These are such gorgeous leaves for winter growing, with freckle-like red flecks. The leaves can be used as cut-and-come again for salads while the plant is quite young. In the heart of the winter, when it reaches maturity, you are better off harvesting the whole heart and cooking it to eat. You’ll find that the red flecks gradually darken as the plant matures. Plant in September and October approx 25cm apart in raised beds, traditional veg patches or in pots and planters. They are frost tolerant and can be grown outside very happily.
