Do you need to know soil pH before growing veg?

cover with soil

Many books will tell you to test the pH of your soil before you start growing your own veg crops at home. We have a slightly different opinion… look at your plot, and look at the surrounding area. Does everything look more or less “right”? i.e. leaves are a nice healthy green colour, growth is good and generally plants look healthy. If so, the chances are that your soil pH is pretty neutral and you won’t have anything to worry about. If a lot of plants have yellowing leaves or if growth is generally poor, then perhaps things are off balance and it’s worth testing. But assuming everything is fine, then we suggest that you just crack on, use plenty of organic matter/compost to enrich the soil and you won’t go far wrong. No need to lose time testing soil if you can see thing are clearly growing well!
