How far apart?
When your herb plants arrive....
Your baby plants will arrive carefully packed in straw. They may look a little tired from their travels. This is quite normal but, as soon as possible, carefully unpack them all.
Then, stand them upright. The roots may be dry, so give them all a good drink of water by submerging the roots for a few minutes in a container of clean water. Now they are ready to plant.
This herb plant is a perennial
This means that it “dies” down at the end of the season, but comes back to life again year after year
Looking after your plants....
You don’t need to put much effort into growing chives (we do the difficult bit of growing it from seed), just make sure they have a healthy dose of sunshine.
Keep them well watered.
Pick off the flowers
To keep flavour at its best, pick off the flowers as they appear. (Don’t forget, you can eat the flowers too)
Give them a cup of tea!
They will benefit from a worm cast tea to keep them green and healthy.
They're ready to harvest when....
Pick your chives as soon as they are tall enough. Be sure to leave about 5cm of the stem when you cut them so that they’ll grow back again.
Annual – a plant that completes its entire lifecycle in one year
Perennial – a plant that “dies” down at the end of the season, but comes back to life again year after year
Biennial – a plant that takes 2 years to complete its lifecycle before dying
Chives add a subtle oniony flavour, and are great finely chopped into salads. You can also pick off the flowers and use them in your cooking too.
