Fertile soil in a sunny spot
Celeriac grows best in fertile and moisture retentive soil with plenty of sunshine. Add lots of compost before planting for best results.
Raised beds are perfect
Raised beds and traditional veg plots are ideal for growing celeriac. If you are growing in pots and containers, use a square/rectangular shaped planter (an old wheelbarrow would work well!)
How far apart?
30cm apart in rows 45cm wide.
Keep them really well watered
Water in well after planting. Then, keep them well watered throughout the growing season. We’d recommend watering daily during dry spells so that the soil stays consistently moist.
Weed with care
Clear away any emerging weeds regularly being careful not to disturb the celeriac root.
Remove side shoots
Once the crown is visible above the soil, remove any side shoots that appear off the sides of the vegetable by pinching them off (you only want to let the main vertical shoots grow)
When to harvest
Celeriac is ready to harvest in the winter months. You will probably be able to see how big your celeriac is, but if not, simply scrape away a little soil carefully to have a look. If the celeriac is a good size, it’s ready to be pulled up.
It'll tolerate light frosts
You can leave your celeriac in the ground until you are ready to use it as it will tolerate light frosts. It’s best not to leave them in if there are very heavy frosts forecast or snow.
