Celeriac – Giant Prague

£5.99

Celeriac plug plants make it easy to grow
If you love celeriac, then you have to try growing it! Suitable for raised beds and traditional plots – dig in plenty of compost when planting. The key to growing celeriac is to keep the plants well watered throughout the growing season, as this will help the root to swell so that you have a decent size celeriac to pull up over the winter months. Our organic plug plants arrive in plastic-free packaging and come with a complete growing guide to help you get the most from your vegetable plants.

Number of plants: 10 plug plants

Variety: Giant Prague (organic*)

In the kitchen: With its celery-like flavour with nutty overtones, celeriac is great mashed, boiled or roasted. Use it in slow cooked dishes or make a deliciously hearty soup.

THESE PLANTS WILL BE SHIPPED IN SPRING 2024

Delivery Info: Please see FAQs for up-to-date delivery info.

Planting advice: Plant plugs 30-40cm apart. Keep celeriac well watered. Harvesting: Harvest celeriac roots in autumn once they reach full size.

celeriac

Fertile soil in a sunny spot

Celeriac grows best in fertile and moisture retentive soil with plenty of sunshine. Add lots of compost before planting for best results.

Raised beds are perfect

Raised beds and traditional veg plots are ideal for growing celeriac. If you are growing in pots and containers, use a square/rectangular shaped planter (an old wheelbarrow would work well!)

celeriac

How far apart?

30cm apart in rows 45cm wide.

Keep them really well watered

Water in well after planting. Then, keep them well watered throughout the growing season. We’d recommend watering daily during dry spells so that the soil stays consistently moist.

Weed with care

Clear away any emerging weeds regularly being careful not to disturb the celeriac root.

Remove side shoots

Once the crown is visible above the soil, remove any side shoots that appear off the sides of the vegetable by pinching them off (you only want to let the main vertical shoots grow)

When to harvest

Celeriac is ready to harvest in the winter months. You will probably be able to see how big your celeriac is, but if not, simply scrape away a little soil carefully to have a look. If the celeriac is a good size, it’s ready to be pulled up.

celeriac

It'll tolerate light frosts

You can leave your celeriac in the ground until you are ready to use it as it will tolerate light frosts. It’s best not to leave them in if there are very heavy frosts forecast or snow.

Slugs & Snails

Keep plants protected from slugs and snail by placing beer traps and keeping the plot weed-free and free from slug-friendlyhiding places.

Celeriac didn't form

Usually if the plant doesn’t swell and form the celeriac root it is because the plant has not thrived due to a lack of sufficient water.

Celery Fly

Celery fly will feed on the leaves of celery and celeriac causing them to turn brown and papery. The plants will tolerate some damage so should be ok. Check regularly and pinch off any affected foliage. Bad infestations can cause the plant to be stunted.

Storage Tips

Celeriac will keep pretty well in a sack in a cool, dark place once harvested.

Ways to cook

You can use celeriac anywhere where you are using potatoes really – add it to mash or slice it up in a creamy dauphinoise style sauce. Great for soups and stews too.
