What to Plant Now (mid July)

Mid-July is a really good time for planting up a few extras to extend the season. This is especially worth doing if you’re not planning to plant winter crops in autumn.

This guide looks at a few veggies that are really well-suited to being planted now and grown over the next couple of months.

Brassicas - Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage, Sprouts & Cauliflower

Honestly, these are just such a great addition to the veg garden at this time of year - you will be so glad you planted them when it comes to late autumn and early winter and you can still harvest some greens from your garden

Leaves - Spinach, Chard, Salads, Lettuces

Bung a whole load of lovely leaves in your plot now and most will keep you going until the first frosts. Spinach and chard will even keep you going through winter...

Last Chance Plants

Whilst there's another chance to plant brassicas and leaves in early autumn, this is really the last opportunity to get leeks, courgettes and fennel growing.

For the Greenhouse or Polytunnel...

If you have the luxury of a greenhouse or polytunnel, then you could happily fill it with some of these plants now - they should grow fairly quickly and give you a good crop before the end of autumn.

A Few Extra Roots

Quick growing roots, like carrots, parsnips and turnips will be a good choice for planting now. You'll probably be able to harvest them in late September/early October.

Flowers for the Kitchen Garden

For cutting, colour, for eating (some edible varieties!) or for bees... adding flowers to the kitchen garden in summer is well worth it!
