Hi Tiny Gardener here….If you’ve been following me over the past couple of months you will have met my lovely cat. She is a real sweetie but has been somewhat intruding upon my tiny garden!
When planting out all my tiny plug plants I decided to keep the cloche tunnel over the majority of the plants as the weather was still quite chilly at night here. It was also providing much needed protection from the digging cat paws too. But as the weather has started warming up lately I realised I need a new strategy to take me through the summer season as the plants will not need to be undercover for much longer. So I set about building a cat deterrent for the plants.
I gathered up the spare bamboo canes I had lying around from last years attempt at growing tomatoes and found a reel of gardening wire tucked away in the corner of the shed. Measuring out the width of the beds individually I cut the canes down to the required length and set about building a grid. Laying them out on the bed I measured roughly how big the spaces would need to be in order to make sure the plants had enough space to grow through the gaps. Using the garden wire I secured the joins together (this was a little fiddly but fine once the edge ones were together.)
Once I finished making them I placed them over the plants and secured them in place with some large stones on the corners. So far these have been working really well and giving the young plants a chance to get going without being interrupted. It really was easy to do and with only two items, I’ll definitely be exploring other ways to keep the pests at bay in my tiny garden. Watch this space!
