This is a Japanese mustard, used widely as a staple green veg in and around Tokyo. The mustardy heat increases as the plant matures, so use baby leaves raw in salads, or cook larger leaves as you would spinach or chard. It’s a quick grower, so keep cutting regularly. It’s fairly hardy so will be perfect for growing in autumn and winter.

This is a leaf beet chard that will add a nice splash of colour to the garden over winter. It’s a nice one to grow in borders and pots as well. Treat it as spinach or pick the leaves while they are young for salads. It will do particularly well grown under cover during the autumn/winter months if you can plant it in a greenhouse.
