    This cylindrical beetroot has a very fine, smooth texture with little fibre. The root maintains its sweetness and tenderness over a long growing season and does not get woody. The roots stand proud above the soil, but can be earthed up and will remain in good condition for a long period. Best grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel if planted in autumn.

    Mizuna is a cut-and-come-again oriental salad leaf with deeply cut, spicy flavoured leaves. It is easy to grow and well worth having in your veg patch. Harvest the outer leaves regularly so that the plant continues to grow for many weeks. It will tolerate a light frost. Once it starts to produce flowers, you can eat the flowers and broccoli-like florets too. Planted in autumn, you can expect a reasonably quick harvest, and should be able to enjoy the salad leaves right through winter. It is fairly tough and will grow well outside, but will benefit from a cloche or fleece in the coldest frosty/snowy weather. The plants come with a complete growing guide.

    This variety produces long, dark pink radishes with a white tip. They typically reach 6cm in length and have a slightly less peppery flavour than your traditional radish but with all the crispy, crunchy texture. Plant them in well drained soil either in sun or partial shade and water regularly. Refer to the growing guide that comes with the guide for tips on planting and maintaining your radish plants.

    These are a useful winter leaf to grow, as they are brilliantly frost-hardy (hence the name – Green In Snow!) and provide a great source of baby leaf for salads. While the leaves are still young, the flavour is quite mild, getting hotter as they grow and mature. If you love a strong dose of mustardy heat, wait until the leaves are nice and big before you harvest them – you won’t be disappointed!

    Giant Winter is an excellent late variety producing thick leeks that will hold well in the ground for a long time and are winter hardy. Planted out in autumn, it will overwinter and you can expect to harvest in late spring when there is not much else coming out of the veg garden. You will find more than one leek growing in most of your plug plants, so you will get plenty of leeks to harvest! You can either tease them apart to plant each leek separately, or plant together without separating. There is plenty of growing advice in the growing guide that arrives with the plug plants.

    This variety produces small-to-medium sized bulbs. A good option for planting early in September if you can, ideally in a greenhouse or polytunnel, otherwise in a sheltered and sunny spot. Bulb fennel is very easy-going – just pop it in the ground in fertile soil, keep it well watered and it should do well. You may need to harvest them small if the weather turns too cold and they are grown outdoors, but if it stays mild you could hope to harvest in November.
